AI Max Ends Manual Campaigns

Google began moving Search campaigns that use campaign level broad match or Automatically Created Assets over to AI Max on 1 September, and the switch runs to the end of the month. Dynamic Search Ads follow in February 2027. Meta has been trimming your options too, with advertisers reporting in late August that placement exclusions are disappearing from ad sets. Value rules replace them, and those can make a placement expensive to win without ever ruling it out.

Both platforms are saying the same thing. You get fewer dials to turn and the system does more of the driving, so creative offers and data now count for more than bid tweaks.

Why it can sting

Automation runs on the signals you give it. AI Max matches searches on intent and goes beyond your keyword list, and it can rewrite your ad copy. A shaky conversion setup or one tired advert leaves it with little to learn from, and weak signals turn into wasted spend surprisingly fast.

Early results show how uneven the outcome can be. Google says the full AI Max feature set adds around 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost. An independent review of more than 250 retail campaigns found revenue up by a median of 13%, although each acquisition cost 16% more. Returns swung from well above baseline to well below, and only about a fifth of campaigns stayed close to their targets. The lift is real, and it leans heavily on how well the account is set up.

Meta's claim that automatic placements lower the cost of each result may hold for a well fed account. Once you can no longer block low quality inventory, brand safety and lead quality become bigger worries, so strong conversion data matters even more.

Small brands still hold some cards. You can test faster than a large company can approve a campaign, and broader matching can turn up customers you would never have thought to target. Blurry measurement and generic creatives usually undo that head start.

An hour well spent

Set aside an hour today and you'll know exactly where you stand.

  • Scan the account. List campaigns using campaign level broad match or Automatically Created Assets and note the big spenders. Export your search terms report as a baseline, and flag any Meta ad set that relies on placement exclusions.
  • Count your creatives. Tally the distinct hooks, angles and formats you have for each product or service. One image and one headline is the first gap to fix.
  • Check your tracking. Confirm the main conversion is a genuine business outcome, such as an enquiry or a sale. Add offline conversions if you close deals by phone or in person, and make sure the attribution window suits your sales cycle.
  • Set guardrails. Put daily caps in place and ring fence 10% to 15% of the budget for experiments, so you can test without risking the whole account.

Feed the machine

Once you know where the gaps are, start with your data. Send richer first party information back to the platforms, such as lead quality tags and CRM events like qualified, booked and closed. The system then learns to chase customers who buy, which also protects you from poor leads now that placements are harder to control.

Creative comes next, because the system can only work with what you hand it. Build several hooks around each offer, state the value clearly and back it up with reviews, numbers or short case snippets. You no longer choose where an advert appears, so each one has to hold up on whatever surface it lands on.

Wider reach also brings more cold visitors, and your landing page has to carry them. Fast loading, a single call to action and social proof at the top of the page give a stranger a reason to stay.

Keeping score

Last click reporting says less once the platforms choose the queries and placements. A simple triad gives a fairer picture.

  • Cost per qualified lead
  • Pipeline created
  • Payback period

Judge AI Max on those, since revenue growth alone can hide rising acquisition costs, as the independent review showed. Add one brand measure such as share of search or aided recall, so you keep watching long term demand as well as cheap clicks.

When to get help

Three signs suggest you have outgrown going it alone. Settings keep changing after each automatic migration, acquisition costs climb while your creative stays the same, and your reports from different channels tell conflicting stories.

A good studio starts with an audit, builds a creative system that gives the algorithms enough variety to learn from, sets up measurement you can trust and then keeps optimising once everything is live.
